The Mental Health Compass is the most in-depth social investigation into public attitudes towards mental health and wellbeing ever conducted in Australia.
Developed by Australians for Mental Health in partnership with 89 Degrees East, it reveals how Australians view mental health, what shapes their beliefs and behaviours, and where opportunities lie to build a stronger, fairer mental health system.
Its findings are an essential tool for government, business, academics, researchers, NGOs, trade unions and social advocacy organisations working to solve Australia’s mental health crisis.

Inside the report
This landmark report brings together insights from a nationally representative survey of 3,019 Australians, uncovering five distinct audience segments that shape how people engage with mental health issues. Each segment reflects different values, experiences and levels of engagement with the mental health system, offering a roadmap for more targeted communication and policy design.
- A comprehensive overview of the five national audience segments
- Analysis of attitudes, beliefs and experiences shaping Australians’ views on mental health
- Practical guidance to inform advocacy, research and policy strategy
- A shared language and framework to build alignment and collaboration across sectors
Why it matters
Mental ill health is rising across Australia, driven by cost-of-living pressures, social disconnection, housing insecurity and ongoing impacts of the pandemic. While most Australians agree that mental health is just as important as physical health, their views on responsibility, system effectiveness and urgency differ widely.
The Mental Health Compass helps advocates, decision makers and organisations move people from passive concern to active support, turning shared values into collective action.
