Mental Health: Australia's hidden productivity challenge

An open letter to the Hon. Jim Chalmers, Treasurer of Australia

Australia's mental health crisis is holding Australia back:

  • 43% of Australians will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime.

  • Two in five young people are now struggling up 50% since 2007.

  • Mental ill health costs our economy up to $220 billion each year that is $8,800 per person.

The Albanese Government’s one billion dollar mental health commitment is a welcome start, but without urgent, coordinated action, millions will continue to miss out on the care they need.

We’re calling on the Australian government to:

  • Lead a whole-of-government response with national targets and real accountability.

  • Guarantee fair, timely access to treatment by funding quality community services and enabling both public and private systems to help sooner.

  • Grow the mental health workforce so every Australian can get the support they need.
